Eight Steps to a Highly Successful Work Search Process

by:  Eric Julian Glanville

Introduction

I have been asked to write a series of short articles about the Independent Work Search process, based on a popular seminar that I've presented to numerous audiences over the last few years. The seminar, in case you're wondering, is based on my own personal experience. So, be thankful – the only other person who gets to hear these stories is my shrink.

My primary goal in this process is to get you fired from your job.

Let me explain. Your current job (if you haven't noticed) is looking for a job. I'll bet you're damn good at it, too. In fact, if you're anything like me, your innate drive for excellence has led you to develop a regimen of job search habits that would make Anthony Robins weep with pride and joy. In other words: you've become your own worst enemy.  You see, you've probably spent your entire adult life learning how to hold onto a job as long as possible. In contrast, the work search process is a position from which you must learn to get yourself fired – and quickly. This is not an adjustment that is easily or rapidly made. Which is why I'm here.  In the next few pages I will describe the Eight Steps to a Highly Effective Work Search. This system helped me to develop a network of 45 key players at more than 15 major organizations. But more importantly, it got me unceremoniously fired from my job of looking for a job. Which was just fine with me – the pay sucked and the lunchroom conversation was pathetic.

Step 1: Determine your target field and position.
